Finding My Niche
When I first set up my dietetics business I thought the only option was to work one-on-one with clients, guiding them on their personal health journeys. I was particularly drawn to women's health, an area I am interested in and where I knew I could make a significant impact. To prepare, I immersed myself in continuing professional development (CPD), diving deep into topics like fertility, pregnancy, and menopause. My goal was to become a trusted dietitian specializing in women’s health and nutrition.
However, whilst I enjoyed learning more about women's health, I realised that my true niche lies with my current skills — something that is uniquely mine and often overlooked in the dietetics field.... my education expertise!
The Pivot: Discovering My True Niche
The turning point came when I reflected on my own background and the path that had brought me to where I am today. Unlike many dietitians, after working in the NHS for a number of years I had taken the teaching route, earning qualifications in education and gaining extensive experience working in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), firstly at the University of Surrey, then setting up an MSc Dietetics programme at the University of East Anglia. This was no ordinary background; it was a combination of expertise that made me uniquely qualified in the field of dietetics education.
I realised that my deep understanding of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) curriculum and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency (SOPs) was not just a byproduct of my career—it was a powerful tool. I knew these guidelines like the back of my hand, and more importantly, I had innovative ideas on how to address the growing placement gap in dietetics practice education.
Embracing My Unique Expertise
With this realization, my focus began to shift. Instead of solely concentrating on one-on-one consultations, I started to embrace my unique position in the dietetics field. I recognized that I could contribute something truly valuable by leveraging my educational background. This wasn’t just about finding a niche; it was about finding the area where I could make the most significant impact.
I began developing educational materials, hosting student placements, and collaborating on projects that aim to bridge the gap between dietetics education and practical application by providing non-NHS practice education opportunities that provide value to student dietitians. My experience in teaching has allowed me to continue to teach & mentor the next generation of dietitians, guiding them not just in clinical practice but in understanding the broader context of our profession.
The Road Ahead
Finding my niche has been a journey of self-discovery. I work on projects that aim to innovate and improve the way dietetics is taught and practiced, ensuring that our profession continues to grow and meet the needs of future generations.
For anyone considering a career in dietetics—or any field, for that matter—my advice is to stay open to the possibilities. Sometimes, your true niche isn’t what you initially set out to do. It’s often found in your unique experiences, the skills that set you apart, and the areas where you can offer something no one else can.
As I continue to grow my business, I’m excited to see where this niche takes me. The journey of finding it has been as rewarding as the work itself, and I’m more passionate than ever about the future of dietetics education.
