June Freelance Summary: A Month of Milestones & Adventures

Welcome to my June freelance round-up!

For those of you considering a freelance dietetics career, this month has been a perfect blend of professional achievements and personal adventures. Let’s dive into what made June 2024 an unforgettable start to my full-time freelance journey!

Full-Time in Freelance

1st June 2024 - the day I embarked on my freelance journey.

This month marked a significant milestone as I officially became a freelance dietitian. In January 2024 I decided to hand in my notice at the University I was working at to move to take the leap & start my own freelance dietetics business. It’s been a whirlwind of activity and I couldn’t be more thrilled about the opportunities and experiences that have already come my way!

BDA Awards Day: Volunteer of the Year

BDA Volunteer of the Year Joint Winners with Liz Stockley, BDA CEO

What a way to start I’m incredibly honoured to have been nominated for Volunteer of the Year at the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Awards Day. Even more thrilling, I was awarded joint winner! This recognition was a lovely surprise following a number of years volunteering and supporting our professional community in organising and hosting PENG CPD events. It’s moments like these that fuel my passion for dietetics and reinforce the value of giving back.

Visiting Lecturer: University of Winchester

One of the highlights of my month was continuing my role as a visiting lecturer at the University of Winchester. I spent considerable time marking assignments and conducting placement visits, which allowed me to stay connected with students and means I can continue to help shape the future of dietetics

PENG Virtual Study Day

On 11th June, I hosted my 15th PENG event - this time a virtual half-day study day for the Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Group (PENG). This event was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and best practices in bariatric tourism and nutritional management with fellow dietitians. The interactive sessions and engaging discussions highlighted the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in our profession.

Funded for a BDA HEI Practice Education Project

In another exciting development, I received funding for the BDA Higher Education Institution (HEI) Practice Education project. This initiative focuses on enhancing practice education models, which is crucial for preparing the next generation of dietitians. I’m eager to contribute to this project and make a meaningful impact on dietetics education.

Personal Highlights: Taylor Swift and a European Campervan Adventure

June wasn’t all work and no play. I had the joy of attending a Taylor Swift concert in Edinburgh, which was an incredible experience & great to have a long weekend away with the girls.

The Top of Stoos Ridge, Switzerland

We also embarked on a two-week campervan trip across Europe, visiting France, Italy, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland. This adventure was a fantastic way to recharge, explore new cultures, and gain fresh perspectives. I did work in the van, sat at the table marking and catching up on emails, whilst my husband drove through the scenic landscapes!

Looking Ahead...

As I reflect on June, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead. The transition to freelance work which once felt overwhelming and a risk, has already been so rewarding, and I’m looking forward to continuing this journey with renewed energy and purpose.  Despite being away for two weeks, in my first month as a freelance dietitian, I successfully matched my previous salary through my freelance work  - it may not continue as smoothly but its given me the confidence to keep striding forwards!

For those of you aspiring to go freelance or seeking practice education opportunities, remember that the path may be challenging, but it’s incredibly fulfilling.
